A mediados de siglo XIX, siguiendo las corrientes médicas higienistas y su utilización como parte de recreo entre la alta burguesÃa, surge en las playas españolas y europeas, la práctica de los baños de ola. Esta actividad balnearia trae consigo un gran cambio en las costumbres sociales y culturales y una nueva prenda, masculina y femenina: el traje de baño. Los distintos tratados relativos a los baños de mar y a los bañadores nos hablan de normas muy estrictas, tanto en lo que se refiere a los colores y materiales como a su diseño. No hay que olvidar que los baños eran recomendados por los facultativos por motivos de salud, por lo que la estética era lo menos importante de estos trajes. Debido también a la moralidad de la época, el material más utilizado era la lana, para que no se pegase al cuerpo. As several documents concerning sea bathing and swimming suits explain, rules both for colours and for materials, as well as regarding their style, were most strict. Let\'s not forget that bathing was usually recommended by doctors due to health reasons, which explains why looks weren\'t all that important in such clothing.
